VANITY BASIN GLOSSARY OF TERMS
SIT ON
Most of the bowl will sit onto a worktop or cupboard. anything below the flattened edge beneath will protrude into the cupboard or at least through the worktop to the extent of the bowl's depth. Sometimes a small hole will need to be made in the worktop for the waste of the basin, should it be lower than the flattened edge of the bowl's underside. This may also be true for the water inlet pipes for the taps, should these pipes not be concealed or enter through the wall.
SEMI RECESSED
Part of the basin sits on the worktop and the rest overhangs the front of the worktop exposing the ceramic upon approach. Almost half of the underside of the basin at the rear has a flattened edge which sits on top of the worktop, often this is fastened down with silicone, and / or brackets. This type of bowl requires a hole to be cut into a portion of the front of the worktop, and some out of a plinth which lies below it on the front, as this is where the overhang of the basin will sit.
INSET
The vast majority of the bowl lies through and beneath the worktop. A thin rim with flattened edge below is fastened on to the worktop again often with silicone and / or other fixings like brackets or bolts. This type of bowl often requires a larger hole to be cut in the worktop for the bowl to drop into.
WALL INSET
This type of basin requires a portion of the wall to be extracted, and then a back section of the basin often including some of the bowl will fit into the opening, making the basin more practical of a fit in a narrow room, where the projection of the basin that sticks out needs to be reduced. Pipework for the taps and the waste is also often concealed, requiring additional room behind the sanitaryware. Access to the rear of the fitting is recommended in case of pipe leaks or faults .
